John Denton Houghton

J ohn Denton was apprenticed to a cabinet maker and upholsterer and after serving his time set up on his own. He appears in White’s 1866 Directory of Leeds as Houghton Denton, cabinet maker 2 Coronation st. by the 1870 edition he is Houghton John Denton, cabinet maker and upholsterer, Woodehouse lane, Guildford street. Some of his furniture still comes up occasionally at auction.  He dropped the ‘Houghton’ on his labels.

John married Ann Eliza Johnson on 24th December 1864 and they had two children Percy (1869) and Walter (1875).

In 1888 John had a shop at 11 Woodhouse Lane, which is now Baza’s Barber shop and a Cabinet Works and Timber Shop at 37 Wade Lane, this was right in the city center so has long since gone.

He was a member of Leeds City Council and on the Board of Guardians for the workhouse.  His death was reported in several Leeds papers.

When John died leaving £5349 3s 8d -a tidy sum in those days – his sons retired and moved with their mother to Sidmouth in Devon.

John Denton is buried at Lawnwood Cemetery and Crematorium.
