Sarah Barker

Sally married Albert Dunne in 1927. They had two children Albert (1928) and Brian (6/10/1930). Albert contracted meningitis. He was badly affected, lost his sight and died in August 1934. He is buried in Lawnswood Cemetery, Leeds. Edith repaid some of the Dunne’s help when Walter was ill by helping them during the crisis. Albert was a plasterer and became involved in the union eventually becoming General Secretary of the National Association of Operative Plasterers. During the war he was based in Cheltenham but Sally stayed in Leeds. They later moved to Greenford as he was based in London. He was awarded the OBE in June 1963. He was a very nice man.

Being General Secretary meant lots of dinners and formal occasions and Sally was never really comfortable with this. When Albert died she persuaded the union to sell the Greenford house and buy her a bungalow in Leeds. Edith gave up her house in Rubery and went with her. Sally’s younger son Brian was still in Leeds. He had been a guardsman but later developed muscular dystrophy.
