Alfred is descibed as a Scholar in the 1881 census and as a Wherry boy in the 1891 census. A Wherry boy operated water taxi’s so presumably Alfred at this time was ferrying people back and forth across the River Arie in Leeds.
In the 1921 census Alfred’s address is listed as 2 Dufton Place, Leeds which seems no longer exist but was possibly in the Seacroft area of Leeds. His occupation is listed as a Painter for J.Robinson and Sons Decorating of East Parade, Leeds.
East Parade does exist still and has architecture built long before Alfred’s time that he would have passed on his way to work.
