Jane was the divorced wife of Thomas Appleton. Her maiden name was Dennis. The fact that Isabella used took her stepmother’s first married name as her surname when she married James Houghton (and presumably before) and uses her maiden name as a middle name for her first child -as Jane had done for two of her children -suggests that they had a good relationship. Jane drops out of sight after June 1889 but Bridget is fined for stealing coal in 1895.
