Susan was in court for stealing alongside her mother in 1887 with the suggestion that Jane was showing her the ropes. Jane got three months hard but the judge, ‘did not like to send the girl direct to gaol; but in order that she might prove herself willing and capable of returning to the paths of honesty, he would merely bind her over in £5 to appear before the court to receive judgement when called upon.’
