Hannah Maddock

Hannah went to Leeds as the servant of a woman from Clipstone, her village in Northamptonshire, when she married William P Binns a Cloth finisher employing twenty-five men, twelve boys and five women.  She married Robert on Christmas Day 1875.  He gave his occupation as ‘grocer’ and she said her father was deceased though he lived until 1902. Hannah’s daughter Elizabeth was a very good needlewoman and she may have learned from her mother.

The feeling is that Hannah was the organising spirit of the household and running a lodging house would have needed some organising.  She insisted on her grand-daughter, Edith, going to her each day for her lunch which was meat and two veg though Edith would have much rather gone home with her sisters and had eggs and bacon.
